Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father was absent from the family, so she was fostered by her mother grandma and godparents. While she was a small girl, she struggled with obsessive-compulsive disorder, and also suffered from anxiety because of the word association. Ford was attracted to acting in her teens, and joined the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted to Sylvia Young Theatre School but after a week, she decided that she wasn't a good fit. Ford decided to apply instead at the Central School of Speech and Drama and was eventually offered the position she wanted on her third try. Shaun Dingwall played Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford's debut on TV was a 1991 episode Surgical Spirit. By the moment she was done with school, Ford already went by "Catherine Tate". Tate appeared on TV in the Nineties with shows such as The Bill and Men Behaving Badly. Tate also regularly worked in theatre and eventually joined The Royal Shakespeare Company during its season of 2000-2001. Tate gained not long after her recognition for her stand-up comedy, that were added to her selection in the year 1996.
